A municipal solid waste shredder is a mechanical device specifically designed to process municipal solid waste (MSW). MSW has a complex composition, encompassing a wide range of soft, hard, and ductile waste, such as plastics, rubber, fabric, branches, small metals, and organic waste. This device uses powerful mechanical force to break this mixed waste into small, uniform particles or chunks for subsequent sorting, recycling, transportation, and reprocessing. It is a key component in the MSW treatment process, helping to improve waste treatment efficiency and achieve resource recycling and reduction goals.
Soft waste: Materials such as plastic bags, plastic film, rubber products, and fabrics have a certain degree of toughness and elasticity, making them effectively shredded by the shearing action of the shredder.
Hard waste: Materials such as branches, wood blocks, and small metal products (such as cans and metal tools) are broken into smaller pieces through the squeezing and tearing forces of the shredder.
Mixed waste: Complex waste, such as municipal solid waste, contains a variety of mixed components. Shredders can handle this waste in a comprehensive manner.

Mixed household waste is conveyed to a pre-processing area via conveying equipment. Large items are manually or mechanically sorted, followed by magnetic separation to remove metals. The waste then enters a dual- or quad-shaft shredder, where high-speed rotating blades apply shear, compression, and tearing forces to the waste, breaking it into uniform, small pieces (approximately 10-30 cm in size). The shredded material is conveyed via a conveyor to a screening device for particle size classification.
